What’s On 7th January 2019
I trust that Christmas has been good for you. I enjoyed some of the Carol services and the Christmas tree display at Dore Abbey was particularly special. I visited before Christmas and enjoyed seeing the nativity scene, albeit with the central attraction missing. A certain baby was to be added to the manger during Midnight Mass. A return to the scene last week saw him in his rightful place. Great idea, and I do hope it will be repeated in 2019.
January is one of those peculiar months in which a winter dormancy settles over parts of the country. Fortunately, there is sufficient happening to keep us busy. Events kick off this evening with Longtown and District Historic Society’s first meeting of the year. It is a members’ evening. There will be short contributions from members about their research (includes Trewyn Mill, Craswall Pilgrimage, R C B Partridge of Abbeydore and the Mametz Engagement).
Flicks in the Sticks, is at Garway Community Hall on Tuesday 8th January at 7.30pm in. From India, DANGAL is about a father’s tough love for his daughters as they fight for the right to represent India in the Commonwealth Games. If your idea of wrestling is that of the over the top muscle bound monsters of American Professional Showmanship you will be pleasantly surprised by this film. Yes, there is sweat and dirt but instead of blood, bruises and machismo we see a lightning-fast match of wits and technique over brawn, enhanced by the convincing performances from the two athletic young female stars.
Definitely, a film not to be missed, thought provoking but ultimately leaving you with a warm feeling that nothing is impossible and all done without resorting to cloying sentimentality.
Directed by Nitish Tewari: Staring Aamir Khan, Zaira Wasim, Suhani Bhatnagar, Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra.
On Saturday 12th, there is Storytelling at Garway Community Centre, 2 pm. The contributors have a special talent for telling stories; what a great way to spend the afternoon!
What a busy week!
Later this month, Friday 24th, Kingstone is hosting a bingo evening, 7.30 onwards. Should be good.
Till next week…
